In August 2017, when littleBits introduced its award-winning Droid Inventor Kit, our goal was to inspire kids to invent through Star Wars. Our method? To teach STEM and STEAM principles by recreating technologies from Star Wars through invention-based learning.
The Droid Inventor Kit was well-received. Not only was it selected as “Creative Toy of the Year” in the Toy Association’s 2018 Toy of the Year Awards, but it was named to several of the toy industry’s most prestigious “hot toy” lists, including:
- TTPM’s “Most Wanted”
- Toy Insider™ “STEM 10”
- Good Housekeeping’s Annual Toy Awards
- Oppenheim Toy Portfolio
- Scholastic Parent & Child®’s 2017 Gold Star Toy Awards
Not only that, but the Droid Inventor Kit topped major retailers’ holiday lists with inclusion as a top tech toy on Amazon’s Holiday Toy List, one of Amazon’s top 100 toys for the season and one of Walmart’s Top Rated by Kids picks.
Why all the excitement? The fact is that coding is the new literacy. As technology continues to evolve, we’re actively preparing kids for jobs in STEM and STEAM that don’t exist yet. Yet today, 71 percent of all STEM jobs are in computing — and only eight percent of college graduates receive a degree in computer science. In fact, computer science is not even available in more than half of K-12 schools in the United States.
We believe it is our responsibility to provide kids with opportunities to learn about technology through play. And now we’re taking our commitment one step farther by adding coding to our esteemed Droid Inventor Kit.
With the Droid Inventor app, kids can control their Droid, give it new abilities with easy block-based coding, and take it on 22+ missions. Then they can level-up their inventor expertise and reconfigure their Droid to give it new skills, or design any Droid they can dream up.
The kit comes with everything kids need to create and customize their R2 Unit straight out of the box. Initial assembly is easy with step-by-step instructions to create their Droid, and control it in Drive Mode, Self-Nav, Force™ Mode, and more. After mastering their Droid Inventor skills, kids continue on to challenges that spark creativity and get them inventing brand-new Droids — no grown-ups necessary.
