January is National Mentoring Month, a series of campaigns and events that help focus national attention on the need for mentors, as well as increase the number of mentors helping to ensure positive outcomes for our young people.
Mentoring is foundational to career success. It helps professionals to develop social capital, it correlates with promotions, and it exposes both the mentor and mentee to new ideas and perspectives. However, a majority of men and 63 percent of women report that they do not have a mentor — putting us all at a disadvantage.
Whether they are male or female, research shows that young adults who are fortunate enough to work with a mentor are 130 percent more likely to hold leadership positions. In addition, kids with mentors are 55 percent more likely to enroll in college than those who did not have a mentor.
Meet Monty: Your Personal Invention Mentor
That said, the littleBits team is excited to introduce you to your very own “invention” mentor this year. Meet Monty Kim, a product design lead at littleBits, who will personally help you navigate your new littleBits STEAM invention kits — Base Inventor Kit, Electronic Music Inventor Kit, and Space Rover Inventor Kit.
In a new series of courses from JAM, littleBits’ video subscription platform for kids, you’ll be able to extend the invention process for each of the littleBits inventor kits as Monty shares extra tips, stories, and demonstrations for young inventors. He will:
- Give you expert invention tips, including step-by-step instruction and ideas for new inventions
- Help you do hundreds of new projects, as well as show you how to create awesome new inventions using the kit you already have
- Empower you to be a real changemaker while you participate in the JAM community by sharing projects and getting feedback
In addition to it’s series of courses about inventing with littleBits, JAM helps kids explore everything from pizza-making to woodworking. Try JAM.com today, and let us know what you think! Happy National Mentoring Month!
