February’s littleBits challenge is full of glowing goodness!

By admin

Did you ever stop to think about what your life would be like without electric light?

What if Thomas Edison had stopped after that first (or 800th?!) flopped experiment? No movies, no iPhone, no TV, no late-night inventing. This month we are celebrating the most fundamental Bit of all – the LED (light-emitting diode)!

We want to see what you can do with a little bit of light. A lantern to decorate your next birthday party? A hat that lights the way on your next adventure? Maybe a bioluminescent animal for your science fair project?

We challenge you to harness the all-powerful LED to build your own illuminating invention.

You have until February 28 at 11:59pm ET to enter your submission through the Invent page or on the littleBits Invent app. You could win up to $200 in Bits and special littleBits swag!

Challenge accepted.

You can use any kit or Bits so complete the challenge, but we recommend the new Gizmos & Gadgets Kit, 2nd Edition. It has a Bluetooth-enabled Bit that allows you to connect wirelessly to your smartphone so you can beam up whatever you can imagine to your Bits. The Rule Your Room Kit’s Makey Makey Bit is also a fun way to control your blinky behavior.

Want to invent with your besties or make some new friends? Head on over to the littleBits Community HQ to see if one of our Chapters is holding an event near you.

Be a mentor!
It is super easy to host your own event at your school, makerspace, or kitchen table. We have a bunch of resources that we will post later this week. Whether you’re at home or at school, there are tips and activities that make it easy for you to run a challenge with your kids. Remember: invention happens everywhere.

Now venture forth and use your inventor imagination to brighten up any dark situation!

“How did it feel to fail 1,000 times?” Edison replied, “I didn’t fail 1,000 times. The light bulb was an invention with 1,000 steps.”
