The littleBits team couldn’t be more excited to travel to sunny Orlando, Florida for the 39th annual Future of Education Technology Conference (FETC) — especially since it’s been so cold in New York City.
From January 27 – 30, 2019 you’ll find us warming up alongside some of the most dynamic and creative education professionals from around the world as we explore cutting-edge new technologies and best practices for 2019.
We previously wrote about some of the top STEM trends we expected to see this year, and we’re looking forward to observing some of these at the show — likely as part of the 175+ intensive workshops and 425 targeted sessions on the docket. But one of the most interesting trends we’re expecting to see highlighted throughout this year’s event is the idea of learning through play.
Learning Through Play: The Future Looks Bright
The way that kids learn is changing, and in 2019 we expect to see more educators advocating for play-based learning — both in and out of the classroom.
According to researchers at Stanford University, too much homework could mean that kids don’t have a chance to meet their developmental needs or cultivate other critical life skills. That’s why no-homework policies in various classrooms across the country are becoming more popular as teachers make more time for play and exploration at home.
Companies like littleBits have always been committed to attracting kids with myriad interests and abilities into STEAM (science, technology, engineering, art, and math) fields. But today, too many parents are forced to cobble together apps, tutors, coaches, camps, and afterschool programs to fill in the widening gap between what future jobs require and what our current education system offers — proving the need for new curriculum and new ways for kids to gain STEAM knowledge.
We believe that play is the vehicle for how to make education more exciting.
littleBits creates products, and opportunity, for kids to dive into topics that interest them — and to learn while they are at it! We are empowering every student to be an inventor and every educator to bring play into the classroom.
