In education, it’s widely accepted that STEM learning prepares kids with the skills for future careers. But because 65% of students will hold careers that don’t exist yet, it’s important that students also learn how to think creatively and collaboratively to solve unforeseeable problems. This is why a recent focus on STEAM (adding creative, arts-based learning to STEM) has arisen. The Art of Science Learning set out to prove that arts-based learning has a big effect on students, as well as professionals. With the support of the National Science Foundation, they tested the “hypothesis that integrating the arts into STEM-related innovation training results in enhanced creative thinking skills, more robust collaborative processes, and stronger innovation outcomes.” Photo by Tran Mau Tri Tam So, what were some of their major findings? - High schoolers’ creative and critical-thinking skills increased.
- Educators and faculty improved their soft skills across the board with an uptick in emotionally intelligent behavior, sharing of leadership, respect, listening, and trust.
- Adolescents working in teams were more innovative, rating 20% higher on their insight, problem-solving, and project clarity.
- Students could more clearly see how lessons transferred from the classroom into their home life, extracurricular activities, and future academic work.
