Meet the Inventor

Pamela Salo

Pamela Salo is the Assistant Director and littleBits Inventor Club Leader at the Buchanan Library in Michigan.  She inspires her students to create playful inventions, like the remote controlled Robots Alive projects shown in the video above. Let’s get to know Pamela better.

Where are you based?

Buchanan District Library, Buchanan, Michigan

How would you describe yourself in six words or less?

Love to explore, share and encourage.

What was your littleBits “a-ha!” moment? The moment you were bitten by the littleBits bug.

In seeking help starting littleBits programming I knew my co-worker Laura was a Star Wars fan. My first idea was to make a Yoda whose eyes glowed, his light saber lit up and moved! Laura loved it. We are now the Dynamic Duo @ BDL.

When starting a littleBits project, what does your design and video process look like?

Usually we build an example because the kids relate to visuals. Then we expand with various avenues to explore so each project is unique. Sometimes the videos are noisy due to the “controlled chaos” going on in the background, (like with the Makey Makey Drum Kit project) but we will also film in a separate room when time allows. We always try to get still shots of Bits & mounting boards.

How has littleBits impacted you creatively?

littleBits makes me feel enthusiastic, confident and daring. Sharing and encouraging the same emotions is the best reward.

What do you plan on inventing next?

A wonderful gentleman who is a retired engineer wants to do a Rube Goldberg event. It will be EPIC!

Is there anything else you’d like to say?

Thomas Edison said “to invent you need a good imagination and a pile of junk.” We have boxes of junk, containers of Bits and no shortage of imagination.
