Mini Pops drumcomputer based on the BeatBox invention by Pjd.

So, what has changed here ?

  • Start Stop switch of the rhytm box
  • Fresh new patterns and sounds, sampled from the Korg Mini Pops
  • Sync output for sequencers

For the project to work as expected, 2 modules have to be made from the HDK ( Hardware Development Kit ). These modules are a low pass filter ( designed by jpd ) and a voltage drop regulator ( this rejects noises and humming ).

For the sync output, we need a optocoupling circuit ( made of standard littlebits modules ), separating the 2 working voltages.

How To Make It


Making the filter and power reduction bitsnaps You can use perfboard and bitsnaps to make a permanent bit or you can use the protobit and wire the few components on this bit. Assemble the circuit without the optocoupler circuit Assemble the circuit as seen in the picture, later on we will add the optocoupler circuit.

Download all files to your computer Connect the power supply to the fork and connect the arduino bit to the PC using a USB cable. Open the arduino sketch and upload it to the arduino bit Once uploaded, you should hear the Mini Pops drumcomputer.


Assemble the optocoupler circuit This circuit separates the 5V from the 4.6V. We need to tape a wire to the input of the Bright LED bit We also need to tape a wire from the split to the input of the Light sensor bit. Set the threshold to clockwise max. and set the switch to Light Tape a wire to the output of the Light sensor bit. This wire can be connected to a sequencer. Tape the 2 bitmodules ( Bright LED & Light sensor ) together, so the LED shine on the Light sensor bit. Cut out a cardboard box to surround this circuit to avoid surrounding light.

Use the split wire and sequencer out Connect the input of the split wire to the Power bit. One output goes to the optocoupler circuit from above The other output goes to the proto bit before the fork. The output wire from the optocoupler circuit can be fed into a sequencer or other circuit. The choice is up to you ...
